making a difference with social marketing
by Nedra Kline Weinreich
Above The Influence - Above ItThe Above the Influence website created by Fleishman-Hillard for the Office of National Drug Control Policy's Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign has just won a Webby Award in the youth category. Take a look at it as an excellent example of a social marketing campaign using the internet to reach a youth audience.

I think that the drug companys are pushing to much drugs. so I am going to be a medical assistant and goto natural ways and shut down the big drug makers.

why would this campaign win any awards? numerous government studies have proven that the hundreds millions of dollars spent on this campaign have been a waste, as marijuana use has not gone down.

A "marketing campaign" by definition implys an effort to meet consumer wants and needs. The "Above the Influence" campaign much more closely fits the definition of propaganda in that it uses biased information and ideas to promote a specific ideology. Even if you agree with the anti-drug message this campaign is a disgrace.

Social good and propaganda are in the eye of the beholder, I guess.

In response to Nedra, that's not necessarily true.
Especially when the main target of the commercials are kids/pre-teens that don't know any facts.
Those commercials don't actually tell any real facts and instead have fancy little special effects and little catchphrases simply to sway their audience.
The "Above the Influence" campaign misinforms (by not informing at all).
It allows its audience to automatically dismiss marijuana or whatever else without giving them a chance to decide for themselves.
So while smoking marijuana may not be the smartest thing to do (in your own opinion), blindsiding a whole demographic can only lead to more problems in the future.
